I still get error 417 and nothing seems to work
I dropped the project completely, replaced the project and reattached it
and I am getting the same results myself.
Works on Ubuntu 11.04 from 6.10.59

You should set the last recommended BOINC setting (6.12.34).

AFAIK, this error occurs when someone is using a proxy.
Some people really need to enable HTTP 1.0 (via the boinc cc_config.xml file).

You can install the Synaptic package from the Ubuntu Software Center,
